An altar is a large table-like object, made of either marble, stone or wood. It occupies a central place in Christian churches in which the celebration of the Eucharist (“Mass”) is the highpoint of their religious rituals. In these traditions, the altar represents a table on which the Eucharistic meal is celebrated, or Jesus himself.
