EXPLANATION
From among his followers, Jesus chose twelve men who have been traditionally understood as his closer friends (see Matt 10:2; Luke 6:13, Acts 1:2). The word apostle comes from a Greek word which means “to send” (see Luke 9:1).
DISTRIBUTION
The sign comes from the Irish Sign Language that the Dominican Sisters brought when they began the School for the Deaf in Waratah, NSW. The sign is known to some members of the Sydney Catholic Deaf community, but is not used in their worship.
