EXPLANATION
As a country, Egypt figures often in the Old Testament of the bible. It was a place where people from Israel fled in times of conflict, and where a large community of Jewish people lived in biblical times. It also has taken on a symbolic meaning as a place of oppression.
The story of how Moses led the people out of Egypt to freedom and their own land is a foundational narrative for Judaism.
