In its ordinary, everyday use, “Lord” was the title given to somene who owned property or had authority. In the Old Testament, it refers to God, and is a translation of the Hebrew word “Adonai”.

In Roman times, it was a title given to the emperor, but in the bible and other early Christian writings, it is used of Jesus after his resurrection.
