Sacrifice comes from two Latin words meaning “to make holy”. In the bible sacrifice usually refers to something that is set aside for God. In the Old Testament, what was sacrificed (either an animal or part of a crop) was either burnt or eaten by those taking part in the ritual. In the New Testament, it is used as a way of explaining the death of Jesus. Just as the crop or animal in the Jewish rituals of sacrifice was given to God, so Jesus himself gave up his life to God when he died on the cross.
